Phung is the Vietnamese word for Phoenix.
Along with the dragon, the tortoise and the unicorn, the phoenix is one of the most important creatures in Vietnamese mythology. As in western culture, it stands for rebirth, wisdom and beauty. In earlier centuries, the phoenix was the symbol of the empress, the dragon represented the emperor.
